An Alternate War-Torn America of the 1940s

What remains when everything familiar has been taken away?

For Nolie Rainwater, the answer is never simple.

Born on a farm in southeastern Oklahoma, Nolie grows up surrounded by family stories, hard work, faith, laughter, and the traditions passed down through generations.

When war, hunger, and fear reshape the world, the life she knows disappears piece by piece.

Driven from her home, Nolie joins the endless movement of refugees heading north through a fractured America.

Along ruined roads and through fragile settlements, survival becomes a daily struggle.

Food is scarce.

Trust is rare.

Yet survival is not the only challenge she faces.

On the road, Nolie encounters Sewd Bollon, a man whose shadow stretches far beyond his own lifetime.

To some, he is a protector.

To others, something far more dangerous.

His presence forces Nolie to confront difficult questions about power, loyalty, and belonging.

As Sewd’s influence grows, she learns the difference between protection and possession.

The America of The Guest is a country shaped by war, displacement, and loss.

Communities struggle to endure.

The old world lingers in unexpected places.

Rumors travel faster than truth.

People cling to whatever hope they can find.

For those living through the collapse, survival often depends on choosing who to trust.

Sometimes those choices come at a terrible cost.

Throughout The Guest, memory becomes one of Nolie’s most important forms of resistance.

She carries stories told by Papa, songs sung by Mama, lessons learned from Granny, and the voices of people she refuses to forget.

As the world changes around her, those memories help preserve the person she is becoming.

Survival is not only about staying alive. It is also about holding on to who you are.

Throughout The Guest, one question returns again and again:

For Nolie, the answer may determine not only whether she survives, but what remains of her when the journey is over.

In future posts, I will share more about Nolie’s world and the history behind it.

I will also introduce the people she meets along the road and the memories she carries with her.

I leave you with this question:
